Textiles

The juxtaposition of memory, deterioration and renewal inspires and informs my creation of wearable pieces using soft felt and textiles. Motivated by personal, past memories, my work relates to the fragility of memory and its breakdown over time. I wished to capture this in a tangible form through the deconstruction of textiles to an unrecognisable state before being felted and pleated into something new.

The vibrant jewel-like colours emphasis the idea of renewal, and most pieces are innovative unique creations encouraging a personal attachment. Larger pieces are created using silk remnants from traditional Suffolk silk factories, an industry that is deteriorating itself as time and technology progresses.

Inspiration comes from traditional collars found throughout history and on costumes. Their construction allows fluidity so they can be manipulated to fit the contours of the wearer’s body, unique to the individual.
